There are very few books that tell of the reality of it, and this is one of them. It’s a fun read that has you scratching your head about a guy who is just like you and I.
The greatest wonders in the world may not be ancient monuments nor even breathtaking scenes of nature. In this book you may find, as I did the world's greatest wonders are the people who live here and the amazing selfless acts of kindness and generosity that are common behavior. Particularly once Tripp left the modern conveniences of the Western Hemisphere and crossed into the east beyond the old iron curtain. Tripp brings this all to life with his own unique writing style.Imagine in America as you drive down the road you see a bicyclist riding along with panniers stuffed full. Would you stop and ask where he started? If he couldn't speak your language would you invite him to your home for dinner and to spend the night? Not many would, yet this became a common occurrence for Tripp. People with little or nothing warmly insisting he come to their humble home weather a hovel in the Urals or a tiny home in the Gobi desert . People were anxious to share what little the have with this alien stranger.I've never read a travel book quite like this one. There is good and there is bad. You feel the exhaustion of trying to keep going when out of water and food in the 100+ degree heat of the Gobi with no help in sight. Or climbing a narrow mountain road as two 18 wheelers hauling car carriers pass each other just missing Tripp and his bicycle. Being blown into a tumbling ball of bicycle, bags and himself by extreme desert crosswinds.In all this Tripp learns that the journey that was to be the greatest thing in his life made him realize that the truly great things in his life are his wife and two sons that he misses so terribly. Soon he becomes more obsessed with getting home to them than he was with doing this ride in the first place.There are many great life lessons in this book. I encourage any adventurer or would be adventurer to get a copy and read it. It may change the way you look at the world or life in general.Truly a must read
This story is so much more than a bicycle ride. Here we have a true American thrusting himself unwittingly through a world full of aliens and proving that we are not so different, that we don't need to fear each other and that things such as love, compassion, intelligence and faith are universal. They transcend the politics of the bordered nations we inhabit and define us as the human beings we are. Brian has written a book we all must read, not just because it's entertaining but because it has an underlying message about how closely connected we all are. There really isn't any room for hate in this world.
Couldn’t put it down, excellent story. Brian had no training or sponsorship for this journey. He was either extremely courageous or absolutely foolish. His descriptions of the encounters along this trip are hilarious, insightful, and educational. Joe-bob says two thumbs up.
A must read for any armchair adventurers. A middle aged guy, an old bike and a dream. A cross continents ride from California to Hong Kong.one of the most enjoyable reads I've had in a long time.
This is not a Foder's travel guide story. It is not the story of a sponsored trip on some top end equipment. It is almost a Frodo-into-Mordor story of just one guy who squeezed through the cracks of improbability and went around the world on his bike! I thought the writing was open, earthy and honest. It says a lot about his fortitude and also a lot about the overall goodness of people. What an adventure!
