Review Written 01/25/2019This is a concise biography of the life and times of Marie Antoinette. She was the last queen of France and among the most notorious of royalty ever to wear a crown, who lived and died during the tumoltious era that was the French Revolution. What exactly do most readers know about her, beyond stories that would make the National Enquirer blush? While the peasants of France were starving did she really say, “Let them eat cake! In the pages of this book it is revealed that these dreadful stories about the queen were all a carefully crafted smear campaign. Animosity against Marie Antoinette, an Austrian-born woman, many French citizens viewed as a transplanted upstart, brewed for several years. In fact extanct sources do not support claims that the queen squandered resources or neglected the lives of her subjects. This book cuts through centuries of bias and preconceived notions regarding Marie Antoinette to reveal a sympathtic, gentile women, swept away by the currents of world changing events. It also takes a revealing look at the events surrounding the French Revolution and its resulting "Reign of Terror."The dark epoch of French history known as the Reign of Terror erupted in the summer of 1793, four years after the French Revolution. The Terror brought forth a new instrument of public execution, the guillotine, which was put into heavy use, decimating perceived enemies of the state. Radicals, revolutionaries, and self-proclaimed 1, who felt they knew how society should run, were eager to decimate anyone they felt threatened their vision. Marie Antoinette became a victim of the guillotine’s blade after she was given a show trail and convicted of treason in October 1793.This book was professionally researched from numerous primary and secondary sources, written, and published by Hourly History. This publishing house has produced an extensive collection of thoroughly researched, concise, informative, and well written historical texts purposfully designed to be read in one to two hours. This collection is focused on chronicling the lives of historically important persons, events, nations, and peoples. I have read many of their offerings and found each volume well written, researched, informative and presented with an unbiased perspective..This book provides a fact filled, straight forward account that is enjoyable to read and easily understood. It was obviously well researched and carefully crafted to sort out historical fictions from documented facts. It is written in a remarkably clear and understandable manner. The narrative is engaging and enjoyable. In total this book presents a more accurate picture of Marie Antoinette's life and the French Revolutionary period as compared to past, more one demensional characterizations. Readers who enjoy biographical history, or those who are interested in knowing more about events surrounding the French Revolutionary period will enjoy this book.
I found the e-book Marie Antoinette: A Life From Beginning to End to be interesting. I had never heard of Phimosis before reading that King Louis XVI had that condition. Marie Antoinette’s involvement mediating the Peace of Teschen convinced many of the French that she had deep sympathy for her homeland but none for her new home. This e-book gave me a good introduction to who Marie Antoinette was, but I do not understand why the French hated her so much. I realize that I must research deeper into her life to find the answers to my question. If one has less than an hour to research Marie Antoinette, then this book is a good introduction to her life and death.
This was an informative book. Though some of it is specifically about Marie Antoinette, more of it is about the French Revolution. As presented here, it is sad to see that Marie Antoinette's destiny was the roll of victim of circumstance rather than wicked queen as she is often portrayed.I was pleased to read the brief passage about the Marie Antoinette Estate at Versailles-- having visited there last year. Now I understand the reasoning behind this small, primitive village.I was actually surprised that the 'false quote' attributed to her, "Let them eat cake"; was not addressed. (She never said this.)All in all, I found it fascinating reading-- yet another piece of history falling into place for me as I continue to read more and more.
A good precis of what seems to have been a very troubled life.Only drawback (within the confines of an hour's read) was it tended to focus more on the circumstances rather than the person …. perhaps that information is not known? How did she cope with moving home, learning a new language, being married at such a young age and (apparently) being hated by the citizens of her new country? Most people would relate to her supposedly saying: "Let them eat cake" - which she (probably) never said.
Highly recommended! This book ties the American Revolution, the French Revolution, the war between the British and the French. It also brings in Lafayette and Napoleon. Thoroughly enjoyable.
Other accounts of the life of Marie Antoinette give an unflattering characterization of her, this book is a bit more sympathetic. The truth probably lies between. In any case, tree book does an excellent job in telling her life story in the context of the French Revolution.
The story of the life and death of Marie Antoinette still fascinates people today. Many books and films make references to her. This short book, one that can be completed in an hour, gives us the essential information about her. The story is fascinating and intriguing.
Well done. Nice, quick and to the point read. Maybe a bit more, is there is more, about the time in captivity. Though I know this was specifically about Marie Antoinette I would have liked one paragraph about the fate of her children, and maybe about Lafayette too.
