Our daughter, Kelly Vella won the television reality show, Forged in Fire. I gave her this book and she loves it! Here are a few of her knives. The horse head sword is her remake of the sword that she won with. The show kept her original. Good for anyone who wants to be better.
This book has a lot of great info but it feels very old. The info is still valid and I learned a lot from it.
Great Book. There is a lot of information in this book that is a "must need" to know about working steel/iron for knife/sword making. I would suggest this book along with the videos of "how to" to get a more thorough understanding of forge working and working with steel.
Great read, but seems more like an intermediate level read at times. That said, I'm still building my first smithy and have yet to swing a hammer on hot steel. I would definitely recommend this to any level, neophyte to well, someone with more skill than I. Lots of pearls inside.
If you are new to bladesmithing, this is the go-to book for beginners. It has enough information on every aspect of bladesmithing to get you thru your first blades. However, I would recommend starting with a book on basic blacksmithing. (A Blacksmithing Primer is a good book that will get you acquainted with how hot steel molds under the hammer.) This book is very informative, well organized and instructive.The steel guide in the back are great. It is an appendix that rates different grades of steel and lists what the proper hardening and tempering temperatures are, as well as the preferred quenching medium,
This was a gift. The man who received it loves it. He's an experienced bladesmith and has made many beautiful knives. Yet, he found the book informative and interesting.
If you are interested in forging knives or knife making in general this is one book that should be in your workshop.It covers everything from setting up the workshop, the forging process and sheath making. The book is interesting because it focuses to some extent on making swords of the western medieval style so would also be of interest to historical rein actors.It was an expensive book in it's hardcover option but beautifully produced. Now that it's available as a softback or electronically there's no excuse for you not to own it!
very much liked this book. It is informative without being boring or overly complex. There are a fair number of pictures and drawings. You can never have to many pictures. I think it is a good starting foundation for smithing. I would recommend it.
