So friends…less is more!Millicent and her husband are living the typical suburban life. Both work, while raising two children. And of course, trying to keep up with the Jones’. OK, that’s all I’m going to say...This book is so twisted, so dark and macabre. I was speechless throughout! Once you’re in, it’s absolutely unputdownable! (I love that word!) Oh, I so dislike being the voice of dissension. I had such high expectations for this book. Unfortunately, I was disappointed.The story is written in first person, from the husband's perspective. For a man with psychopathic tendencies who lives on the edge, he is remarkably dull and complacent. Honestly, he bored me.The wife is rigid and robotic. For reasons I don't understand, he finds her militant personality sexy. But there is absolutely nothing sexy about their relationship.Pacing is slow, largely because the husband is clueless. He doesn't ask questions and doesn't want to know details, and so the murder aspect of this story remains on the periphery. We spend a lot of time with him screwing up his kids, making excuses to leave his job, and dealing with his obsessive thoughts about what his wife is doing with "their" victims.I saw the first twist coming early on. I kept reading in the hopes that something would shake the husband out of his stupor. When something finally did, I just didn't care anymore.*I received an advance copy from the publisher, via NetGalley.*

This book will mess with your mind...A LOT.You're sucked right in to the twisted and crazy lifestyle of Millicent and her husband. While they appear to be the typical suburban household with 2 growing kids and 2 jobs, their "dates" are anything but normal.While twisting and turning in their messed up psyche, you're also trying to reconcile that they are your neighbors...they are your tennis coach, your realtor...It's a game of cat and mouse, but throughout, you're not quite sure who the cat is or who the mouse is. This book will make you second guess everything at least twice and then, when you think you've got it, another mind bender will show up.While it's a fast read, I think mainly it's quick because you want to find out what happens next. There is a well developed mystery within the story and fairly decent backstory information so that you can try and figure out how Millicent and her husband function every day.This is the first book that I've read of Downing's and it left me speechless and happy, all wrapped in to a crazy, confused package. I loved the intensity and while I'm unsure if I "liked" the book, I definitely liked the style.

4.5 STARS!!This edge of your seat debut novel by Samantha Downing is a total crowd pleaser. Fast-paced and compulsive to read, My Lovely Wife is a story about a bored husband and wife who decide to shake things up to keep it interesting. I won’t get too into the summary of the story- you get the gist from the blurb. I love that the book was written from the husband’s point of view. His inner monologue is written in such a way that keeps you turning pages way past your bed time.Downing has an interesting way of being creepy and disturbing without being graphic or gritty. The implications woven throughout the story are enough to paint quite a picture of this devious couple. She shares just enough detail to hook you but leaves so much up to the imagination. And even though this is a debut, Downing makes a splash with not only her story telling, but also with her quality of writing. She writes a great story. I didn’t particularly care for either the husband or the wife- but that’s also one of my favorite characteristics of the best psychological thrillers. These characters are messed up, twisted, and completely deplorable. Not only did I feel like I knew this husband and wife (they’re you neighbors, tennis partners, your realtors, your kids’ friends’ parents) but their kids added just enough drama and intrigue to add complex layers that seemed to jump right off the page.I have to mention the ending. I LOVED it. It was perfect. I didn’t see it coming and make sure you read to the very last line of the story. It just might make the little hairs on the back of your neck stand at attention. I’m definitely looking forward to more from Samantha Downing because while this is a fantastic debut, I can tell she’s only going to get better from here!
