I think this is worth the price just for the included 2017 interview with Peter Jurasik, but this book is fantastic as a portable B5 reference guide. In the Ancient Days I used to read the online Lurker's Guide (which is still there in 2018!) and these days I can browse the small mountain of script books or the B5 Encyclopedia, but all those books have moved into Collectables Territory so I can't be grabbing at them without fear of bending a cover $ or getting a page dirty $. Can't take the toys out the packaging to play with anymore, but this book is the one toy I don't have to worry about getting dog-eared.It would be nice if more space could have been given to summarize each episode, but at nearly 500 pages, an extra half-page per episode would have turned this into a two volume series. Each episode gets a decent quick summary, and also covers the "aired" (and some un-aired) episodes/movies. Aside from the televised source material, this book also discusses the (canon) novels, making it a one stop Dive Into things B5. For extra added reading, there are 6 1/2 pages of "sources", so if you want to read up on the background behind the background, the information is there.One interesting item of note is on the LAST page of the book.. It mentions that if one contacts the publisher (?ECW Press?) with your purchasing info then allegedly one can also get the ebook "FREE". No clue about "receipt number" as I happened to get this via Amazon, but it might be worth looking into. At present I am hauling this book along to read whilst riding the subway, but would be nice to have an online version to flip over to while watching DVDs on my PC. Or I could leave my DVDs on the shelf and possibly stream the series, as it became able for streaming on Amazon in mid-2018!! :)---> UPDATE: I followed the instructions and about a week-ish later did receive back an ebook attachment. Haven't had a chance to view it yet, but guessing everything tracks... ....the instructions are on the last page of the book.
Babylon 5 was first on the PTEN , then on TNT, then on SciFi. Along the way there were movies, books, comics, and several sequels.This book takes it all and places all it into order. Most SF series on TV consist of individual episodes that can be seen in any order. With J.M.Straczynski's 5 year novel for television understanding the arc and where an episode occurs within it is very important.It consists of spoiler-free several page essays on the individual episodes meant to be read just after you've watched it. Then there are Station Diagnostics pointing out Interesting things to notice and memorable lines of dialogue. Finally there is my favorite part- Interesting Facts- which has observations on real world sources and parallels and stories of things that happened at the same time that the episodes were being filmed. All of it fascinating even to someone who has seen the series many times.
I'm glad I found this book. As a science fiction fan, I've followed many series. I'm an original Trekkie (since 1966), a Niner (DS9 is my favorite spin off) an a lurker, a fan of B5 since the first sitting of the gathering. To me, two things hurt B5. One was being on PTEN, such Warner didn't give the attention it deserved. For a while it was better treated on TNT, and I'm glad that comet shows it now. The second was pinheads constantly comparing it to Star Trek. Let's be honest, treks utopian future is nice, but unbelievable. B5 has hope, but it comes with all the warts. The book is full of valuable information on the show and the only thing keeping my rating from 5 stars is a lack of really good synopsis of each episode. This deserves to be on the shelf or kindle of any B5 fan.
This is a great companion for a rewatch, or for a first watch--and if you've never watched Babylon 5, what are you waiting for? Order those DVDs right now! Guffey and Koontz add depth to every episode, point out behind-the-scenes details. Goes beyond the TV series, as well, for the true completist. This is an indispensable guide.
As a Babylon 5 fan, I found this book a welcome reminder of what I enjoy so much about the series. What's more it synopsizes the short-lived Crusade show, B5 movies, several related canon books and short stories.
I have been watching Babylon 5 from the beginning and thought this would be a nice companion piece. Am enjoying very much even though it is an Unofficial Guide. Gives some insight into each episode and tidbits of information. I like it.
I enjoyed reading this book as it served as a great synopsis of the Babylon 5 universe. It also answered many of my questions about the cast, especially Michael O'Hare. Good choice for fans of B5.I recently watched the whole series on Amazon Prime and remembered why I loved it so much. I wish it would have included pictures.
Better than I would have believed... Synopsis, insights...background details...Very convenient for a re-viewing of B-5 (which my wife and I are doing) Just buy it.
