I love all things Liz. I've read it all! She is fully responsible for creating in my heart a full blown obsession with the book of Ruth.I could not wait for this book as I loved The Women of Christmas and I knew this book would be wonderful.I planned to wait until Lent and use it as a guide for bible time. It stared at me from my nightstand taunting me for a few days. I read another book and ignored it. I re read Sally Clarkson blogs. But then I could take it no more!!! I stayed up two nights until the wee hours to finish it. I could not put it down. I wanted to stay with the Mary's. I did not want to leave their dedication and fearless love for Jesus. I want them to keep showing me how to live the Lord as they did.I did not want to see our Lord suffer but I felt like I had to stay with them. I could not pull myself away.It happens when one is blessed to read an amazing book it is so bitter sweet when you finish the last page. That is how I felt with The Women of Easter. It's not long enough my heart cried!!! I want more!!! Thank you Liz for this book. You are a treasure!!!

But this book is no laughing matter, as Liz often writes with a unique fun style, where you can almost hear her laughter between the lines. No, this is a serious matter she has written about: three Biblical women’s encounters with the Savior. In a world riddled with sin, we see a Savior who reaches out with love, all the while facing the cup of wrath of God, for these three women Liz writes about, and for all women then and now. (All men and children, too!)Liz has indebt word studies throughout the book, which assists the Bible reader to understand the language and times behind the Easter story. She explains the customs of women and how Jesus’ encounters with these three Marys set them apart in a day where woman were not esteemed. Liz will take you through Mary-Jesus’ mother; Mary-the sister of Martha and Lazarus; and Mary-called Magdalene.Every year I give out a little devotional day-by-day booklet I’ve written about the Passion Week. I want to share in my passion to study in debt the week leading up to Resurrection Sunday; what Jesus did, what Jesus said, etc. This year, in addition, I gave out more than a dozen “The Women of Easter†books as well. I told the ladies to read Matthew 27:55-56, Mark 15:40-41, Luke 23:49 and John 19:25, telling them that THEY are the OTHER WOMEN watching, nearby and meeting the needs of others. Jesus’ death on the cross, where He paid MY, our, penalty for all sin, His burial and then three days later, His resurrection, is the basis of our faith! Therefore I take Easter, Passion Week and the miracle of God’s gift of Jesus to the world seriously!
Liz Curtis Higgs is a wonderful teacher of Scripture. And in this book her teaching excels with they way she combines all 4 gospels to walk us through the last week and a bit of Jesus' time on Earth. In so doing we're given a first hand account of those days as we see through the 3 Mary's eyes.Only 8 chapters long and with a study guide included at the back this is a tremendous resource for walking through Holy Week and experiencing the emotion of the occasion. The intensity and cruelty of the crucifixion and the confusion then elation of the resurrection are all described brilliantly by stepping through the 4 consolidated gospels line-by-line using multiple versions to add further embellishment.Higgs ends with the tremendous encouragement for us all that just like Mary Magdalene whom Jesus tasked with sharing the news of His resurrection with the disciples, we too are tasked with the same great news of Easter: He is Risen. He is Risen Indeed!Highly recommended.
I loved the idea of the book, and also enjoyed learning more about the Mary’s, but a lot of the writing was opinion based versus fact based. The author may or may not be right in her assumptions - I’m sure she’s incredibly knowledgeable - but they are assumptions, nonetheless, and not what I was hoping to get out of this book.
As a devotional meditation leading up to Easter, this book is great. Liz "speaks" in a very folksy way to her readers, sharing the multitude of Bible translations she has used to get the feel of each passage. And she has some wonderful insights sparking out of that intensive study of the text.I can see it being used in a small group if everyone has her own copy. I got it, though, to use as background study for a pre-Easter S.S. series. Trying to use it as a basis for a S.S. series where the class members did not each have the book was not very successful. I didn't want to just read it to them, but the chapters were hard to summarize, sharing nuggets came out choppy, and coming up with ways to discuss it was hard. Could easily just be my own limitations that are the problem. The discussion questions printed at the end of the book presupposed having read the chapter, so were not very useful for my class prep.Again, I would highly recommend as personal Lenten reading and meditation.
This book was so eye opening and a must read for any Catholic woman. Being able to put myself in these women's shoes and also see how they responded to Jesus' love during Holy Week especially was inspiring and beautiful. Easy to read and relatable to every day but still able to be saturated with scripture and referneces. Higgs is able to bring a complex interpretation of the Bible to an easy to understand book with prayer interwoven throughout. I was pleasantly surprised by how deep it was.
This book unveils the story of Easter, the days before and after, with unique emphasis on the lives of the women who were present with Jesus during this season of His life. Liz explains the customs, examines the language of that day, compares translations to give the complete picture and champions the faithful women who walked with Jesus with their whole heart!Thank you, Liz!
