The book Nothing But The Truth is a collection of letters, dialogues, and documents about a certain event regarding a kid named Phillip Malloy humming the Star Spangled Banner during the beginning of each day. The various sources the book provides are all biased based on the writer of it, except the dialogues. The reader’s job is to figure out what the real event was despite all of the bias. This book is very unique in the way it is written. Most books are written from one point of view, but this book is written in third person objective and in about 4 different perspectives in first person. This book shows how events in real life can be easily blurred by bias and how easily a person would believe a fake version of a certain event.I personally enjoyed reading this book and attempting to figure out what had really happened. I would recommend this book to my friends.
Wow, just wow! Can't wait to discuss it with all who read it! People are too terribly, personally motivated without regard for more than just their own gain or outcome! Everything in this book happens all the time. Sad reality for many AMERICANS- students, teachers, school districts, families...too much sensationalism and assumption and people trying to get attention and money...life could be simpler if people were more ethical displayed decency and integrity. No one wins in these situations where people don't care enough to take the time and take care of the real needs we face as humans. PERSPECTIVE- truly a noble word when we can really consider it from all angles!
Interesting story, even more so by the different perspectives. As Avi points out in his introduction, parents and teachers will find the plot very plausible. Lots of potential for family or class discussion about providing the whole truth. It's an easy and insightful novel. I highly recommend it.
This would be confusing for some middle schoolers and I had trouble trying to follow what the purpose of the book is. But some good talking points on how each character handled the events and was influenced by the others. And How that influenced the telling of the story and the changing of lives as a result.
This book was required summer reading for my son who is going into seventh grade. He really liked it; he finished the entire book in two days. The theme is very topical today, with our current political climate. I would actually like to read this one myself.
I remember reading this and being moved by it about 10 years ago. But upon re-reading it. I was kind of disappointed. It's not as powerful as I remembered. The kid is a lying brat.
I first had to read this book in college, and I didn't understand why. Now, over 20 years later, I do. It shows how determinig the factual truth about an event can be difficult to do, when the people involved don't tell the truth entirely, are not observant or just want to focus on part of the truth. The truth is that Philip Malloy is a clown and school jerk who gets what he deserves, and poor Miss Narwin is forced to retire from a career she has loved for 21 years. Philip's disaster could have been avoided if he told his parents the truth and tried to do extra work to bring his grade up.
This should be required reading for everyone. It tells the story of how a teen boy’s self created mess turns into an international event and the effects on many lives. It is an important story- a lesson for all.
